Not only is Maxine Thomas an accomplished artist, she has also led a distinguished career in law, as assistant attorney general in the state of Washington and as a professor and dean of the University of Georgia School of Law. February's PEACOC fellowship meeting will be held at the Springboro Performing Arts Center, where Alieu Nyassi, PEACOC board member and assistant vice president of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at St. Elizabeth Heathcare, will guide attendees in a Racial Healing Circle session, designed to improve our capacity as communities and as a country to see ourselves in each other, so that we can shape a more equitable future with opportunities for every child to thrive. Children and adults are welcomed to participate together in this activity. In addition, the performing arts center is holding a reception for local African-American textile and quilt artist Maxine Thomas, whose works combine yardage, thread, dyes, and paint will be on display. The concern is not only for PEACOC's adult and child members, but also many of our adult members work in settings in which self-exposure would put many others at risk. This November, let us gather to give thanks for our personal and community accomplishments and to learn from each other what is next. This meeting will kick off a return to face-to-face fellowship among families of color, youth of color, and parents of children of color, in Springboro and surrounding communities, yet another thing we have to be thankful for! Since last June, families raising children of color in Springboro have organized for mutual support and to put an end to the racial threats, slurs, and intimidation faced by children of color in our schools. Parents Empowering All Children of Color now invite families of color and their allies at 7pm at Springboro UCC Tuesday March 16 to take action. Students will be sharing their stories and experiences within the school, and PEACOC will call on decision makers from the school board and administration to actively participate in solutions to make our district a safer, more welcoming, and inclusive space for all students. Please show your commitment to equity and your support for students of color in Springboro by attending this event We are also looking for written narratives from students of color and/or their parents about racial threats and/or intimidation experienced in school or from other students through social media, to share with school district officials. Students names in such narratives will remain anonymous. These narratives help build a case that action needs to be taken in our schools. Dorian Cox is a Research and Development manager at Sunstar Engineering in Springboro. Devon Shepherd is an engineer at GE Aviation in Cincinnati in areas of manufacturing, sourcing, and quality. Over fifty students residing in the Springboro school district submitted entries to our contest. Of those, 16 students in 5 different grade categories won a prize. But, of course, all the entrants in this year's contest are winners because they chose to challenge themselves and grow by learning about important figures and events in Black history. This year, the award ceremony will be held via Zoom, on Friday, February 26, at 7pm. During the ceremony, attendees will hear a message from PEACOC's board president, listen to music by Black composers performed by Springboro students, and of course listen to the contest winners recite their own Black History Month essays.
